Framing The Subject

The photograph above is a good example of framing the subject of the photograph. Using existing objects or landscapes can center the attention of the viewer and help create an emphasis to the composition. Also, a good sense of center of attention creates an impact on the viewer's eyes and adds a sense of drama.

Rule of Thirds Photography

This photograph illustrates the use of thirds. By dividing the picture plane into thirds and placing important elements of the composition on one or more of the intersections, a more dynamic image is created which provides for tension to occur between two or more points of interest in the composition. In addition, the use of strong shadow lines and 'bird's eye view' camera angle, helps add drama and direct the viewer's attention.

The importance of organizing a composition helps the viewer to scan the poster or project in an orderly manner. It tells the viewer to look here first then here and so on. This sequence enables a purposeful distribution of information and avoids confusion and ambiguity.

The design considerations that your cover should address include:

The narrative is the story or plot of the novel. You should consider time, place, character, genre and plot as important aspects of the narrative. Your design should indicate or prepare the reader as to the type of action, the genre as well as the mood of the narrative.

As you begin your design considerations you must address a design priority.....Is your story formal or is it informal?.....Is there humor involved or is it a serious theme?....Who is the audience?

In order to create the appropriate cover for your narrative every aspect of the cover design should be addressed. Mood can be created not only by your choice of image, but colour, type face or font, white space, design movement, textures all play and important role in communicating the mood and genre of the narrative.

Art In Action Poster

The 'Art In Action' poster is a poster design that implements the aspects of good poster design. These aspects or criteria should include a strong image that draws attention to the poster. This can be achieved by having strong content or a strong image. Also, a strong image may mean stong colours that help create a tension or excitement. Considerations must also be given to the title so that the viewer can read the title a distance of twenty feet. Your dimensions and resolutions are 11 x17 @200-300dpi.

Tshirt Project

The Tshirt project is a project that enables you to print an image onto a white Tshirt. Select an image that you wish to have on the shirt and create an Illustrator EPS file with cut lines for submission.

Deadline for submissions

The following assignments are due at the end of the semester: four panel 'unity' assignment, eight panel independent project and your tshirt design project. All of these assignments must be posted on your bog for marking. If you have any questions or concern about meeting this deadline you must contact me asap.

Final Page

A completed page or panel should include the text components in such a manner that the type both informs by providing detail and ordered information, but it also is sympathetic to the matrix layout. This panel provides both the background graphics or pictorial components and provides the reader with an ordered sequence by which the text information is provided. The header provides and maintains the most important topic to be covered, the 'pull quote' provides a quick personal interpertation of the event and the textbocks provide further details of this page's content. Also, attention to where the text is placed and the colours that are used provide and maintain the design unity. The choice of font or fonts provide support to the theme or mood of the page and the project as a whole. Text not only provides the information and details, it also is in and of itself a graphic aspect to the total design of the project and page.
